IKEA is collaborating with Swedish House Mafia to work on products that will democratize creativity and music production

IKEA has announced that the company is collaborating with electronic music triumvirate Swedish House Mafia to explore the subject of “music and creativity at home”.

The initial point for the collaboration is the belief that, while a lot of people are now making music at home, they can quickly discover that “a home is often built and designed to match totally different needs than the ones you have as a music fan or creator”.

IKEA and Swedish House Mafia plan to come up with some solutions to the problems that home musicians might encounter, and will launch a new range of products in September 2022. This will comprise “home furnishing solutions designed to make it easier to get into a creative flow for producing, playing and listening to music at home.”

“We are very excited and happy to announce the collaboration with Swedish House Mafia,” says James Futcher, Product Design Leader at IKEA of Sweden. “With their solid expertise in music production, we hope to be able together to democratize creativity and music production so that even more people can be more creative at home.”

Swedish House Mafia said: “We both wanted to reach out of our comfort zones and create something new and fresh together: a pure collaboration between music creators and a home expert.

“We strongly felt a need to collaborate with someone who shared our vision of making it possible for everyone to create music at home. As artists and producers, we also understand the importance of a home studio setup and the needs and challenges many up-and-coming artists and creatives have at home.”

Superbooth 2021: Tiptop Audio Intros ModFX & FSU Eurorack Effects Modules

At Superbooth 2021, Tiptop Audio introduced two new Euro effects modules, ModFX and FSU, in addition to introduced a new line of Buchla 200 Series modules

Built on the same platform as ECHOZ, ZVERB and the Z5000, they have the same UI with CV control over all three DSP parameter and the Fidelity control over the DSP clock.

Both are available in the White panel as well as the newer backlit Black panels.

ModFX offers three banks of modulations effects, from classic stomp box and rack effects to more experimental processing not found in any other hardware. The developers say that one of the strengths of ModFX is the way it moves static mono sources into expansive stereo sound fields.

The Chorus bank has effects that range from subtle widening to wobbly ambiences or deep detuned rooms, particularly when combined with the Fidelity control.

Flange effects come from the modulation of very short delay times and this bank expands on that to include Karplus and Resonant pitch effects and panning using the Haas effect. Programs like the Chord Resonator can turn percussive tracks into harmonic material and the Haas panning creates wide stereo spreads without pitch or amplitude modulation.

ModFX’s Filter bank does not have the typical high and low pass options common to synths and instead features a set of highly modulated and unusual filtering options. Programs include a couple of vintage inspired all pass filter based phasers, filter based panning and some vocal formant options.

An in-depth intro video:

FSU is designed to bring more aggressive and destructive processing to the FX lineup, from guitar pedal inspired distortion, to granular processing, to tape recorder style Sound on Sound looping.

Distortions include Ring Modulation and Frequency Shifting for some vintage analog mayhem.

Glitch bank has time-based effects that abuse the aspects of delay and pitch pushing them to more experimental and extreme sounds.

In addition, Sound On Sound recreates one of the more interesting features of reel to reel tape decks that allowed overdubbing endlessly without multi-tracking. This bank uses a short tape loop and adds a variety of digital processes like pitch shifting and granular playback to make it more experimental.

Superbooth 2021: TINRS Intros Ardabil & Switch Modules

At Superbooth 2021, This Is Not Rocket Science (TINRS) introduced two new Eurorack modules, Ardabil & Switch.

Ardabil is a utility module, designed to “show you the thread of your signal in one integrated design.”

Features:

  • Precision adder – two CV inputs that add together, without changing their scaling.
  • Attenuverter – plug in any CV and let the knob scale your CV up or down -1 to +1 before it is added to your thread.
  • Offset – With this knob you can add a fixed -5V to +5V to your signal.
  • Buffered multiple outputs – Threads into three buffered outputs; one of which has an LED that lights up when there is a positive signal. The fourth jack is a buffered inverted output with a LED that lights up when there is a positive signal (which is a negative signal in the other three outputs).
  • VCA – The CV input controls the volume of the audio input into the output. The CV input defaults to the signal from a buffered output.

The entire thread runs:

Buffered Outputs = Precision adder + Attenuverter + Offset

Inverted Output = Buffered Output * -1

VCA Output = Audio * CV

In addition, Ardabil has second thread running independently upside down alongside it.

Ardabil is expected to be available in Dec 2021, priced at 250 EUR incl. taxes.

Switch is a utility module that features two independent dual gang switches, with three positions, that add a layer of choice to your system.

You can patch up to six things and select two at a time. Twice. Every switch selects one out of three signal paths for both paths.

This Switch module is completely passive and will have no effect on the signal you run through it.

Switch is scheduled to be released in December. See the TINRS website for details.
