New Music Album from John Carpenter, Anthology II: Movie Themes 1976-1988

Sacred Bones has announced Anthology II: Movie Themes 1976-1988, a collection of new music by director and composer John Carpenter, featuring reworked movie themes from his ’70s and ’80s films.

Anthology II (Movie Themes 1976-1988) features new recordings, performed by Carpenter and his musical collaborators Daniel Davies and Cody Carpenter.

The album includes selections from Escape From New York, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, They Live, Assault on Precinct 13, Prince of Darkness, The Fog, Halloween (and its sequels), and beyond. Among its highlights are the three lost cues from The Thing, previously unreleased and now re-recorded. The Thing marks one of the rare occasions that John Carpenter stepped away from scoring duties and entrusted the task to another composer, the legendary Ennio Morricone. Upon receiving Morricone’s score Carpenter felt that the film would benefit from the inclusion of additional music and took the initiative to record and insert multiple synth driven cues.

Track listing:

  1. Chariots of Pumpkins (Halloween III)
  2. 69th St. Bridge (Escape from New York)
  3. The Alley (War) (Big Trouble in Little China)
  4. Wake Up (They Live)
  5. Julie’s Dead (Assault on Precinct 13)
  6. The Shape Enters Laurie’s Room (Halloween II)
  7. Season of the Witch (Halloween III)
  8. Love at a Distance (Prince of Darkness)
  9. The Shape Stalks Again (Halloween II)
  10. Burn it (The Thing)
  11. Fuchs (The Thing)
  12. To Mac’s Shack (The Thing)
  13. Walk to the Lighthouse (The Fog)

Serato brings Stem Separation to its Sample 2.0 Plugin

Serato brings Stem Separation to its Sample 2.0 plugin: an instant remixing tool for your DAW.

Serato has released Sample 2.0, a major update to the sampling plugin that adds stem-separation technology that enables you quickly ‘unmix’ source audio into stems, letting you use and arrange samples in new ways. The stem-splitting technology has also found its way into the company’s Studio DAW and DJ products.

Released in 2017, Serato Sample was always designed to be fast and fun. Serato Sample also incorporates features from the company’s Pitch ‘n Time technology, allowing producers to time stretch and change keys, while maintaining “best-in-class sound quality”.

The company says that Sample 2.0 is the first VST plugin to combine sampling and stem-separation features. Stems can split audio into four distinct tracks – vocals, melody, bass and drums. This makes it easy to integrate samples, acapellas and instrumentals into tracks through real-time audio source separation.

“Innovation is at the centre of the Serato universe – not only in how we work, but how our community creates.” said Serato Chief Strategy Officer, Nick Maclaren. “Sample 2.0 brings stem separation to everyone’s fingertips, blowing the lid off what’s possible in the sampling space. We’re excited to launch this update, but mostly to see what producers will create with it.”

Features:

  • Real-time stem separation
  • Key detection
  • Key shifting
  • BPM sync
  • Unrivalled time stretching
  • ‘Find Samples’ in a click
  • Manual cue placing & triggering
  • Per pad parameters
  • Channel output routing
  • Chromatic Keyboard Mode
  • Mono & Poly voicing
  • Dynamic Beatgrids

Sample 2.0 is available now for a one-off price of $149, or you can get it on subscription for $10 a month. It runs on PC and Mac in VST/AU formats, and there’s also a free trial version that you can download from the Serato website.

Behringer announces Polivoks Synthesizer, Created in collaboration with Original Designer

Finally, Behringer has officially introduced their Polivoks synthesizer, created in collaboration with original designer Vladimir Kuzmin.

The Polivoks (aka Polivox) is a Soviet-era synth analog subtractive synthesizer. While the synth’s 2 VCO/VCF/VCA architecture is similar to other analog synths of the era, the original Polivoks is known for the unique sound of its filter and its rugged industrial design.

Behringer had announced plans in 2021 to collaborate with the pioneering Russian synth designer. While the company hasn’t announced details for the new Polivoks, it appears to be a Euro-format version of the original.

“I designed the Polivoks in 1980 at the Urals Vector plant in Russia, while it was produced by the Formanta Radio Factory. The Polivoks has features that are very unusual on most analog synthesizers, which creates this very unique and distinctive sound, often referred to as ‘Russian synthesizer sound’,” notes Kuzmin.

“For many years, it has been my dream to create a new and much improved Polivoks,” adds Kuzmin. “Uli’s synthesizer Vision provides a fantastic opportunity for me to contribute to the reimagining of my Polivoks and to make it accessible to everyone – a Vision I profoundly believe in and want to be part of.”

Details on pricing and availability for the Behringer Polivoks are still to be announced.
