BOSS Intros RC-505 mkII and RC-600 Loop Station pedals

BOSS has officially announced two new Loop Station pedals, the RC-505mkII and RC-600.

The RC-600 and RC-505mk II are flagship models for the serious loopers out there, and these offer seriously in-depth features.

The five-track RC-505mkII is the follow-up to the company’s acclaimed 2013 tabletop looper. The RC-600 is the do-it-all floor unit, offering six stereo tracks, advanced foot control, and deep dives for players who need to customise their looping experience in detail.

Both feature 32-bit sound, an impressive array of onboard effects, built-in rhythms, a range of connectivity options, external control support, and USB output for computer.

BOSS says that “the RC-505mkII retains everything that made the original so loved and adds a wealth of new features to make the looping experience even more creative and free flowing”.

Each of the RC-505mkII’s five stereo tracks now includes customizable FX and Track buttons, making it easier to color and control loops in the heat of the moment. Users can set up various parameters and trigger them with a press, hold, or double-click. Pressing the Undo/Redo button reveals a secondary layer to double the control options.

Two external control jacks are also available for connecting footswitches or expression pedals, and each has its own dedicated set of parameters. And with the Assign function, users can set up 16 additional targets for hardware control and MIDI operation.

The RC-505mkII also provides a greatly expanded FX palette to process sounds during recording and playback. There are 49 Input FX and 53 Track FX types to choose from—including new vocal harmony effects—and it’s possible to use up to four in each section at once. Groups of four Input FX and Track FX can be stored in four banks for quick recall, and a step sequence function is available in some FX to create dynamic real-time movement.

The RC-505mkII’s expanded connectivity and onboard audio processing allow performers to do more with less external gear. There are two XLR mic inputs and two mono/stereo line input pairs, plus an input mixer with two mic compressors and independent channel EQs. Three stereo output pairs, a headphones output, and an output mixer are also available, complete with assignable routing options and master reverb and compressor effects. In addition, the RC-505mkII’s panel faders have longer throw for more precise adjustments and rigid construction for a more solid feel.

Each of the RC-505mkII’s five stereo tracks now feature customisable FX and Track buttons, for on-the-fly tweaking and control over individual loops. “Users can set up various parameters and trigger them with a press, hold, or double-click,” says Boss. “Pressing the Undo/Redo button reveals a secondary layer to double the control options. Two external control jacks are also available for connecting footswitches or expression pedals, and each has its own dedicated set of parameters. And with the Assign function, users can set up 16 additional targets for hardware control and MIDI operation.”

The RC-505mkII wealth of effects can process your sounds during playback and recording as needed.  There’s 49 Input FX and 53 Track FX types to choose from—including new vocal harmony effects—and you can even use up to four in each section at once. “Groups of four Input FX and Track FX can be stored in four banks for quick recall,” Boss explains, “and a step sequence function is available in some FX to create dynamic real-time movement.”

The RC-505mkII improved connectivity now allow it to “do more with less external gear”. There are two XLR mic inputs and two mono/stereo line input pairs, plus input mixer with two mic compressors and independent channel EQs.

Three stereo output pairs, a headphones output, and an output mixer are also available for musicians, complete with assignable routing options and master reverb and compressor effects. There is more, the RC-505mkII panel faders have “longer throw for more precise adjustments and rigid construction for a more solid feel.”

The floor-based RC-600 Loop Station is the boss of Boss’s floor-based Loop Stations and offers huge potential for guitarists, singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists.

Users can capture multiple mics and instruments with the RC-600 six stereo phrase tracks and control them with nine assignable footswitches and three different pedal modes, with further scope for external control support.

The RC-600 display offers a large, circular loop indicator and seven LCD screen variations. There’s a whopping 49 Input FX and 53 Track FX types. “Users can process sounds before and after loop capture to bring colour, variation, and excitement to performances,” says BOSS.

This could well be a one-stop effects unit for some musicians with these Boss guitar effects, a guitar-to-bass sim and vocal FX all onboard. There’s also “DJ-style” effects like Beat Scatter and Vinyl Flick. Up to four Input FX and Track FX can be used at once on the RC-600, and banks of four can be stored in each section to call up as needed.

The RC-600 can be your drummer with over 200 built-in rhythms in styles ranging from pop, rock, latin, jazz, acoustic and electronica. Each rhythm type includes four pattern variations with intros and endings, and automatic fills for transitions between.

“It’s also possible to import SMF rhythms using the BOSS RC Rhythm Converter software,” says Boss. “And with 16 different kits, users can instantly transform grooves with sounds from heavy rock to light percussion and everything in-between.

iZotope releases RX 9, the audio repair software

iZotope RX9, new software update is to primarily tackle “emerging audio capture and production issues to restore damaged, noisy audio to pristine condition,” which means that some of the most popular RX modules have been overhauled, particularly those that are widely used in post production.

The flagship RX 9 Advanced is specifically targeted at post production professionals, with the new version of the Dialogue Isolate module making it easier than ever to extract clean dialogue from its environment without artifacts.

Elsewhere, the new Complex mode in Ambience Match is designed to connect dialogue and ADR cuts with real background movement and textures, with multichannel support up to Dolby Atmos 7.1.2.

Common to both RX 9 Standard and Advanced is the new Dynamic Mode in the De-hum module, which promises to remove any amount of hum and interference in a single pass. There’s also 30-step undo in the History list, and a Restore feature that enables you to roll back an audio selection to any previous step in said list.

“For RX 9, we have revisited some of our most important processing tools and made them even better,” says iZotope Principal Product Manager, Mike Rozett.

“We wanted to focus on the fact that dialogue is getting noisier and noisier: from location shoots to warehouse sets, to wireless interference on sound stages, to ADR that’s being recorded remotely in cars and closets and kitchens instead of in studios. The industry is facing more and more noise, with less time to fix it. We’re here to help.”

iZotope RX 9 is available now for PC and Mac.

The Standard version is available for $299 (regular price $399) while the Advanced version is available for $799 (regular price $1,199). The software is also included in the RX Post Production Suite 6, which is on offer at $999 (regular price $1,999).

Roland SP-404 MKII Now Available

Roland has officially introduced the SP-404 MKII, a new version of its performance-focused portable sampler with improved pads, an OLED screen, new effects and more.

This Roland SP-404MKII creative sampler promises next-level performance beatmaking.

The SP-404 MKII version promises everything that users loved about its predecessor as the design is based on Roland’s own research and users feedback, but also new features such as more expressive pads and updated knobs. Boot time, project loading and sample import have also been speeded up.

The SP-404MKII comes with 16GB of internal storage, which is loaded with a collection of “curated” samples. Power can be provided by AA batteries or a power bank, and you can interface with mobile devices via USB. Further connectivity includes dual headphone outputs and a mic/guitar input.

Another highlights is the OLED screen, with a zoomable waveform view promising to ease the process of sample editing. Samples can be chopped up in realtime or you can auto-chop, with envelope and pitch shift enabling further tweaking.

In addition, there is a new resampling workflow which enables you now re-record patterns and effects layers. Skip Back Sampling, meanwhile, enables you to capture the last 25 seconds of audio from your most recent performance, ensuring that those unforeseen moments of inspiration would not be lost.

As with Effects, you get both your SP favourites – the likes of the Vinyl Simulator and DJFX Looper – and new processors such as Lo-fi, Cassette Simulator, and Resonator. The Vocoder, Auto Pitch, and Guitar Amp Simulator effects, meanwhile, can be applied directly to the mic/guitar input.

Other enhancements include the sequencing workflow. You can apply adjustable input quantize and shuffle for custom swing, link pads so that you can trigger multiple samples, or hit the Roll button for variable note repeat. The BPM can be set on a per-note basis, enabling instant tempo changes, and sets can be chained together.

Lastly, there are new customization options: download a faceplate template and you can create custom overlays, and you can personalize both the logo on the startup screen and your screensaver.

Here’s what they say about it:

“Lightning-fast boot time, project loading, and sample import will have you knocking out beats in no time. Plus, 16 GB of internal storage give you ample space to store your creations or have your favorite samples at the ready. Whether you’re a beatmaking newbie or an SP pro, you’ll feel right at home with the intuitive layout and classic SP effects, plus a revamped sampling and sequencing workflow, Skip Back Sampling for quick performance capture, DJ mode to mix beats live, and more.

The SP-404MKII makes on the go beatmaking even easier. With its lightweight-yet-rugged design and expanded features, this unit is ideal for making amazing sounding beats on the move. Run it on AA or mobile battery power, capture audio from or stream directly to your mobile device via USB, or collab with a partner using the dual headphones outputs and mic/guitar input.

With the SP-404MKII’s vivid OLED screen and zoomable waveform view, sample editing is smooth?as silk. Chop up samples by tapping out edit points in real time?or?slice samples automatically.?Then finesse them with envelope and pitch shift.?Use the new resampling workflow to re-record patterns and effects layers for detailed sound design. And with?Skip Back Sampling, you can?preserve?those?fire?moments by capturing?up to 25 seconds of audio from your last?jam.?Now, it’s never been easier to?dial in and?cook up?beats?the moment inspiration strikes.”
