Win the Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field Synthesizer

Perfect Circuit has teamed up with Hainbach – German synthesist, to give away a Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field synthesizer – the latest version of the iconic portable synth workstation.

The contest is open to US Residents with a valid email address. See the contest page for details.

And what does Hainbach think about the OP-1 Field? Here’s what he say about it:

“I did not like the OP-1 Field at first glance. I traveled around the world with my ten year-old, battered original OP-1 and played it in countless shows, songs, and soundtracks. I used it like a Swiss Army knife – at home I have instruments that do each individual job better, but on the road the OP-1 is a wonderful combination of tools. It became one of my most important instruments. When the newest iteration came around it felt strange – I was very attached to my OP-1, so I did not want to give the Field a real chance. But when I took it with me on tour and travels over the past months, that changed.”

Mutable Instruments, R.I.P.

Mutable Instruments has updated their website with an announcement that “The production of all modules has halted and Mutable Instruments will permanently shut down in December 2022.”

The announcement marks the end of one of the most influential electronic music technology companies of the last decade, not just in Eurorack, but in synthesis in general. Founder Émilie Gillet announced plans earlier in the year to shut down the company and retire from the area of music technology.

The Mutable Instruments site has been updated so that information on their designs is now in a Module Archive. Support for modules will be available through the site until June 2023.

Mutable Instruments created several standalone synths and DIY projects before moving into Eurorack, including the Shruti-1, aka ‘The Simplest Synth That Could Possibly Rock’, Anushri, Ambika & MIDIpal. Gillet phased these out in 2014 to focus on the company’s Eurorack designs.

With good reason.

In the last 10 years, Mutable released a steady string of successful Eurorack designs, including the Braids macro oscillator, Clouds texture synthesizer, Grids topographic drum sequencer, Plaits, Marbles random sampler, Rings resonator, Tides ‘tidal modulator’ and more.

These designs brought new options and new ideas to modular synthesizer, ranging from the polymorphic possibilities of Braids, the granular washes of Clouds and the AI-driven generative drum sequencing of Grids. As a result, it’s now rare to find a modular that doesn’t include some Mutable Instrument modules, and some combinations (ie, Rings into Clouds) have helped define modern styles of modular synthesis.

Mutable’s designs are so well-loved, in fact, that they’ve made the jump from Eurorack to other formats. Gillet used open soure licensing for Mutable’s designs, and they’ve been cloned in Eurorack, translated to software like VCV Rack, and incorporated into hardware synths, like Arturia’s MicroFreak and MiniFreak.

As a result, Mutable Instruments’ designs will be influencing hardware and software synthesis for decades to come.

Torso Electronics T-1 Algorithmic Sequencer Gets Major Update

Torso Electronics inform us that they’ve released an update for their T-1 Algorithmic Sequencer that they say is their ‘biggest update yet’.

The update adds new features, along with new ways of interacting with the sequencer’s algorithms, that were developed in collaboration with the Torso Electronics community, including parameter locks, FX tracks and more.

New in T-1 firmware version 2.0:

  • Per-Step Editing – It is now possible to edit all of the T-1’s algorithms and lock parameters into any step of a sequence – giving you a completely new level of control on top of the T-1’s generative approach. Everything from the voicing, random amount, pitch value, and note division can now be changed per step.
  • FX Tracks – The T-1 is now a real-time MIDI FX processor that lets you apply all of the embedded algorithms to incoming MIDI notes. This allows for creating complex arpeggiators, evolving midi effects, and MIDI looping. These new possibilities provide an excellent basis for keyboard players who want to ornament their keyboard playing with the T-1’s algorithmic qualities.

Other new features in firmware 2.0

  • Quick view when changing parameters (optional)
  • Internal track routing (route one track to another)
  • Brand-new and improved random modulation behaviors
  • Stepped to slew possibilities on the random modulation
  • Free division (non-quantized divisions per track)
  • Cycle looping
  • CC track updates (includes slew and step edit)
  • Playable keyboard in the PITCH menu
  • Multi-channel tracks
