Bastl Instruments Releases Outsidify for iPhone

This iOS app from Bastl Instruments uses your phone’s mic and speaker to capture resonances and generate feedback

Bastl Instruments – Czech manufacturer is known for making quirky, affordable and portable synths and noisemaking machines and just a few weeks ago, it announced the release of the Kastle ARP, a ‘pocket-sized patchable synthbox’ geared towards producing buzzy arpeggiated melodies.

What Bastl isn’t well-known for is developing software, hence our surprise when we discovered that the manufacturer had announced the release of an iPhone app. Though it is the first software, we are all for it, especially as it looks like one of the most unique sound-making apps we have come across in a minute.

Outsidify uses your phone to turn the outside world into an effects processor: “The world is your resonator”

Outsidify uses your phone’s speaker and microphone to create feedback loops and capture resonances from the world around you. You can create feedback using the sounds in your environment or load audio clips into Outsidify to be played through the onboard sample player.

Feeding the phone’s output back into its input, you can change the tone and feedback amount via an XY pad and delay the sound from the mic using the delay slider. In addition to playing back samples, the player can loop them, chop them up and adjust sample playback speed from 0.25x to 4x.

Load up sounds into the app, pop your phone inside anything that will resonate or reflect the sound it produces – pop it in a coffee mug or even point the speaker into your mouth – and you’re able to record a layer of resonance on top of any sample. This effectively turns your phone into a kind of effects processor that uses the world around you to manipulate any sound you like.

Outsidify can also capture impulse responses, so you’re able to capture the acoustic profile of any space and recreate this later using convolution reverb plugins like Logic’s Space Designer.

Features

  • Player

— for replaying your files

— loop

— adjustable start and end points

— ¼ to 4x speed slider

— crop/uncrop

  • Recorder

— for recording and replaying sounds

— mix crossfader between the microphone and the player

— save wav files (export to files, airdrop, apps etc.)

— adjustable start and end points

— copy the recording buffer directly to player

— speed-match recording (re-adjusts the recorded speed proportionally to the speed set in the player, preserving the pitch)

  • Feedback pad with amount and tone
  • Delay of the microphone going back to the feedback
  • Timer macros

— set countdown time

— record trigger

— play & record trigger

— capture impulse response

Outsidify is priced at $5.99 and runs on iOS 15.2 and above on iPhone 6S and later. The app is available now from the App Store. Find out more on Bastl Instruments website.

Austrian Audio Releases MiCreator Studio with USB-C Microphone & Audio Interface

Record using the built-in condenser mic and use the audio input to capture a second device. Though we have seen audio interface/microphone combos before, but perhaps none so ‘obvious’ as Austrian Audio’s new MiCreator Studio, which really does look like an audio interface with a microphone stuck on top of it.

Austrian Audio has announced its MiCreator Studio, an ultra-flexible pocket recording system that seamlessly combines a condenser microphone and a USB-C audio interface in a compact, rugged design that lets you record anywhere.

Billed as an “ultra-flexible pocket recording system,” this hooks up to your computer or mobile device via USB-C. As well as the built-in condenser mic, there’s also a mini-jack input for connecting a second device that can be recorded simultaneously, such as the optional MiCreator Satellite mic.

“Many times a quick riff, a scratch vocal, or unplanned content creation is the best performance, so why not capture everything with studio quality sound,” says Martin Seidl, CEO of Austrian Audio. “Whether you’re at home or on the go, MiCreator Studio always keeps Austrian Audio recording quality within reach”.

Bryan Bradley, President of Group One Limited, Austrian Audio’s US distributor, adds: “This is an exciting new direction for Austrian Audio, and we’re excited to put this high-quality mic into the hands of musicians, songwriters, and content creators, making it easier for them to record premium audio whenever and wherever they feel inspired.”

Other features include two headphone outputs, two gain settings and a jog wheel that controls the volume. There’s latency-free direct monitoring of the mic and input while you’re recording, and MiCreator comes in a supposedly “rugged metal housing”.

Key Features

  • Plug-and-play USB-C microphone and audio interface
  • Ezoic
  • Condenser capsule for top-notch audio quality
  • Max SPL: 130 dB
  • Austrian Audio Open Acoustic Technology
  • Two gain settings and one knob jogwheel for easy volume control
  • “FlexTilt” vertical adjustment of the mic head for ideal positioning
  • Input for connecting a second device (MiCreator Satellite, Y-LAV mic, Instrument) – great for interview situations
  • Two headphone outputs: Easily collaborate with fellow musicians
  • Latency-free direct monitoring of the mic and input while recording
  • Rugged metal housing with changeable faceplates for various color combinations and customization
  • Designed in Vienna, Austria

As well as being available on its own priced at $199/£179/€199, MiCreator Studio can also be purchased in the ‘MicCreator System Set’ bundle, which includes the Satellite mic, cables, two faceplates for each mic, the MiniBar stereo bar and a custom case. This costs $299/£269/€299. Purchased on their own, the MiCreator Satellite and MiCreator Y-Lav lavalier mic cost $99/£89/€99 and $49/£49/€49 respectively. New SSL 2261 Modulation Orgy LFO Module Enables You ‘Sync In, Orgy Out’

Synthetic Sound Labs has introduced an updated version of Modulation Orgy LFO Eurorack module, 10 years after the release of its original 2260 Modulation Orgy.

The Modulation Orgy is a unique Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) that enables you sync in, orgy out.

It features manual and external voltage control over LFO Tempo (speed), tempo Multiplier, Waveform and Waveform Distortion.

Eight Waveforms are produced, including Sawtooth, Ramp, Rectangle, Triangle, Sine, Sweep, Lumps and Random with morphing between adjacent waves. Waveforms can also be further modified using the Wave Distort controls.

Not Your Dad’s Orgy Module

The 2261 Modulation Orgy features new firmware that offers improvements, such as waveform morphing and random wave slew, and the new module width is now only 8 HP (half the width of its 16 HP predecessor) and is available with either black or silver faced panels.

SSL calls the Modulation Orgy “the most fun you’ve ever had with a LFO!”

Features:

  • The 2261 can produce 8 morphing waveforms, including a random (sample & hold) wave with variable slew.
  • All the waveforms can be altered by the wave distortion CV.
  • It also includes a tempo multiplier. This is combined with the tapped tempo to allow the LFO frequency to be set at a multiple of the tapped rate. The available multipliers are 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, and 4. This allows half- and double-time, and triplet times.
  • The LFO tempo, multiplier, waveform selection, wave distortion, and output level are all voltage-controlled.
  • The LEVEL CV input responds linearly to 0 to +5V and is normalled to +5V so that with no input, the 2261 outputs are at maximum. This convenient input can frequently save a separate VCA when doing voltage controlled modulation depth.
  • The SYNC input can accept clock pulses from other equipment, which allows the 2261 to be synchronized to other devices.
  • A CLOCK OUT which can be used to drive other equipment, allowing a tap-tempo controlled clock for an analog sequencer or drum machine, for example. A phase reset on the first tap to the tap tempo input allows you to keep the LFO on the beat with a single tap.

The SSL 2261 Modulation Orgy is available now for $250.
