BOSS RV-200 Reverb offers ‘Ambient Bliss’ at an Affordable Price

The Boss RV-200 Reverb could be a perfect balance of features, size and price, with 12 different reverbs, high and low filters and 127 presets.

BOSS has introduced the RV-200, a hardware reverb pedal that offers 12 versatile reverb types, for “everything from subtle spatial color to complex, dreamy textures”.

The RV-200 is much smaller than the company’s #CommissionsEarned RV-500, more affordable but still packing the algorithms and editing in. Say hello then to the long-awaited RV-200.

It also features a new reverb type to the part of 12 different modes; Arpverb. And with the level of sound editing available, it is good to see Boss has provided 127 memories to save your sounds, along with two footswitches for fast access to different types.

The RV-200 doesn’t need to lean towards classic plate, spring and hall reverbs or complex ambient sounds because it wants to do it all.

The full list of modes finds Shimmer, Arpverb, Slowverb, +Delay, Modulate, Lo-Fi, Gate and Reverse alongside Room, Hall, Plate and Spring for a comprehensive selection.

Controls over these sumptuous sounds can go deep with reverb time, effect level, predelay, variable high and low filters, plus a density control to adjust the ‘weight’ of the sound.

The RV-200’s parameter knob also provides access to settings that are unique to each specific type of reverb. Further flexibility is provided with the footswitches that can be assigned for different functions; bypass the effect, scroll through memories, and activate a hold function for infinite sustain (or as long as you want to hold it). You can even assign ‘performance effects’ to a footswitch including Warp, Twist, and Fade.

As we would expect from a Boss pedal in 2023, many of the parameters can be assigned to an external expression pedal and MIDI is provided via mini TRS inputs. Via MIDI players can connect a number of Boss 200 series pedals together and select presets on them simultaneously to explore huge potential.

What they say about it:

“The RV-200 delivers inspiring reverbs and premium sound in the streamlined BOSS 200 series design. Twelve versatile reverb types—including the newly developed Arpverb—provide everything from subtle spatial color to complex, dreamy textures for ambient explorations. Quickly dial in sounds with the fast-access interface. Save favorites in 127 memories. And take performances to the next level with flexible onboard footswitches, deep external control support, and head-turning creative tools like Warp, Twist, and more.”

Korg Launches MPS-10 Drum, Percussion & Sampler Pad

The WaveDrum maker brings us another rhythmic offering.

Korg has launched MPS-10 Drum, Percussion & Sampler Pad, which appears to be a rival to Roland’s SPD-SX Pro – apparently the best electronic drum pad right now – in the shape of the MPS-10, and it’s billed as nothing less than “a gamechanger in drum and percussion technology.”

That said, the basic premise is pretty familiar: you’re presented with six velocity-sensitive pads that are used to trigger sounds. These are accompanied by four smaller CC pads, which enable you to do everything from applying filters and real-time tonal changes to firing off “EDM-inspired” drum rolls.

A total of 2,350 assignable instruments are included, powered by more than 3,000 samples, so you can expect “nuanced variations” when you hit harder or softer. Effects include a default master reverb and filter, along with two insert slots and a further master effect slot, and you can apply processing on a per-pad basis.

The Smooth Sound Transition (SST) feature is designed to maintain the flow when you strike a cymbal or repeat a sample, and you can create immediate silence with the appropriately named sound off button. There’s also a four-track looper, complete with dedicated effects, and you can import your own sounds via USB flash drive and assign them to pads.

You can also create your own kits using the MPS-10 Editor, which runs as a web application.

External triggering options include dual trigger-in terminals that, with the help of a Y-shaped cable, enable you to use up to four triggers at a time, and there’s an additional bass drum trigger.

Korg does have some expertise in the percussive department. The MPS-10 was developed by the team that previously created the WaveDrum and Pearl e/MERGE.

Apple Updates Logic Pro for Mac + iPad – Adding 32-Bit Recording, Mastering Assistant, Beat Breaker and More

Apple today released updates for Logic Pro for iPad and macOS, adding Mastering Assistant, the Sample Alchemy plugin, Beat Breaker for reshuffling audio in real time, 32-bit recording and more.

New in Logic Pro for Mac 10.8:

  • Mastering Assistant – Mastering Assistant is an effect plug-in that offers a quick and easy way to add final professional polish when you’re creating a release-ready mix. Mastering Assistant, which is available in the stereo output channel of a project, analyzes the audio and fine-tunes the sound through dynamic adjustments, frequency-balance corrections, and timbre enhancements.
  • Sample Alchemy – With the Sample Alchemy instrument plug-in, you can transform a single audio sample into a playable instrument using a variety of synthesis techniques, including granular, additive, and spectral synthesis. You can create a wide range of sounds, such as unique sound beds, pads, effects, and rhythms. .
  • Beat Breaker – With the Beat Breaker multi-effect plug-in, you can radically reshape and reshuffle audio in real time, slicing audio, rearranging it, and adding scratching effects. In addition to playing back slices in a different order, you can set the speed, direction, and volume with a given number of repeats for each slice. All these slice playback features define patterns that you can change on the fly.
  • Slip and Rotate tools – The Tools menu in the Tracks area and time-based editors now includes Slip and Rotate tools, which you can use to move content in audio and software instrument regions without moving the region boundaries. See Tools common to multiple working areas.
  • 32-bit recording – You can record at 32-bit depth (floating point) with a compatible audio interface. The advantages of 32-bit recording are that you can later remove digital clipping that occurred during the recording simply by lowering the gain of the audio region, and you can increase the gain of a recording made at a low level without increasing the noise floor.
  • New sound packs – Two new sound packs are available: the Hybrid Textures sound pack contains 70 patches as well as over 80 Apple Loops featuring Sample Alchemy. The Vox Melodics sound pack contains a diverse collection of over 475 lyrical phrases, hooks, layered harmonies, FX and one-shots. You can download these and other sound packs using the Sound Library Manager.

New in Logic Pro for iPad 1.1:

  • Mastering Assistant – Mastering Assistant is an effect plug-in that offers a quick and easy way to add final professional polish for a release-ready mix. Mastering Assistant, which is available in the stereo output channel of a project, analyzes the audio and fine-tunes the sound through dynamic adjustments, frequency balance corrections, and timbre enhancements.
  • Quick Sampler Recorder mode – The Quick Sampler plug-in features Recorder mode, that lets you create instruments and drum kits by directly recording audio with the built-in microphone or a connected audio input. You can set when recording starts and turn on monitoring to hear the signal while recording.
  • Interact with other apps using Split View and Stage Manager – Move seamlessly between Logic Pro and other apps with added support for Split View and Stage Manager.
  • Add multiple audio files using drag and drop – Select and drag multiple files from the Files app to quickly build drum kits or add stems to a project.
