Tetrad, New Synth Combines Physical Modeling + Granular Synthesis

Physical Audio has introduced Tetrad a new soft synth for Mac & Windows, developed in collaboration with composer and transmedia artist Gadi Sassoon.

Tetrad takes four oscillators, routes them in combination through a Quad AM processor that works like a pseudo-sequencer, a specifically tailored Granulator, and four physically modeled plate resonators.

How Tetrad Works

It starts with the oscillators, which give a choice of five modes, each with four oscillators per voice (hence the name Tetrad). In the Macro view, you can change the main oscillator waveshape, and apply frequency modulation. Oscillators can be tuned in various ways according to the chosen mode, from basic intervals to diatonic inversions. An ADSR provides initial amplitude shaping before heading down to the mixer. There is also a Sidechain audio option, bypassing the oscillators and allowing any signal to be used.

A 4×4 Matrix Mixer blends the four inputs onto four busses. Next is Quad Amplitude Modulation with Depth, Shape and Rate, which works well into the audio range, and Phase set individually per bus. In Tetrad’s Quad Granulator, the signal is split into grains that are replayed in different ways. You can affect the grains’ window shape, Size, Pitch, and change the Feedback of the granulator. Finally this feeds the Plates through a preamp with overdrive.

Features:

  • Over 100 presets to get started immediately.
  • Generate voices through Basic, Chords and Modal chords, Free and Flex modes. Plus ADSR envelope, FM Frequency and FM Depth for all oscillator types.
  • Quad AM module to ‘pseudo-sequence’ or gently modulation voices, with control over phase Shape, Depth, Gain and Rate (up to 250Hz), plus Phase Displacement per voice.
  • Quad Granulator mangles the four voices into new textures individually or all together. Grain Size, Feedback, Rate (up to 50Hz), or individual Grain Size and Pitch per voice.
  • Plate Resonators that can be driven and positioned graphically on the virtual sound stage. Set Decay, Metal Cuts, Preamp Drive globally; or Drive and Decay per plate.
  • Comprehensive Modulation Matrix with over ## destinations, eight LFOs and three envelope-following sources, plus MIDI and MPE parameter sources.
  • Three filters (LP/BP/HP) to curtail and sculpt effects from audio-rate modulation distortion and extreme granulation artefacts.

Tetrad is available now with an intro price of $59 (normally $99).

Torso Electronics S-4 Sculpting Sampler Gets Major Update

Torso Electronics has released S-4 Sculpting Sampler OS 2.0 – a major update that includes a rewrite of the core engine and expands the S-4’s capabilities.

S-4 Scultping Sampler OS 2.0 introduces macro controls, scenes, varispeed recording, unlimited sample length playback, and new dynamic modulation options.

The official video overview:

Features:

  • Perform adds the ability to create global macros, enabling control of multiple parameters across the entire instrument simultaneously. Any parameter can be mapped to eight performance knobs and four punch-in effect buttons, allowing transformative changes with a single gesture.
  • Scene enables saving and instantly launching parameter and sample snapshots. Full machine states can be saved, variations built, moments captured, and samples swapped on the fly. Up to 128 scenes are available per project, controllable directly on the device or via MIDI Program Change.
  • Temp brings performance functionality with temporary control of all parameters. When temp is enabled, S-4 saves the initial state and snaps back instantly when released.
  • Disc is a new sample playback device that streams audio directly from S-4’s internal storage, enabling playback of long-form audio files. Ideal for full-length stems, field recordings, or long loops, Disc is only limited by available storage space.
  • Follow has been added to the list of modulation devices – an envelope follower that uses the amplitude of any of the four track outputs, or the S-4’s inputs, to modulate parameters – enabling dynamic, responsive modulation.
  • New performance and utility features include copy for duplicating devices, tracks, and scenes. The Tape device has been enhanced to improve live looping with varispeed recording. The interface has received a comprehensive overhaul, and many existing devices have been improved with new features.

S-4 OS 2.0 is available now as a free download for all S-4 owners.

Moog Messenger In-Depth Review – ‘A Major Milestone For Moog Synthesizers Under InMusic’

In the latest Sonic State Sonic Lab video, host Nick Batt reviews the new Moog Messenger synthesizer.

The Moog Messenger is designed to be the company’s most accessible analog synthesizer to date, and blends so-called ‘East Coast (Moog)’ and ‘West Coast (Buchla)’ synthesis capabilities.

Here’s what Batt has to say about it:

“This synth is a major milestone for @MoogSynthesizers under InMusic. It’s the first synth to be designed and built under their ownership and Moog are keen to show that it’s not falling under the lowest common denominator approach many feared.

With new Oscillators (with folded waves, and a variable wave sub Osc), and a new Filter, its a big departure from the usual Moog instrument.

The filter is the same ladder 24dB with multi-mode LP LP2 pole, Band-Pass and High-Pass modes, but the big news is that it now has bass compensation (Res Bass) which is nicely done, resonance no longer drops the bass – unless you want it to. Its nicely done.

Add to that some other nice features, Keyboard S&H, parameter recording on Sequencer steps, loopable envelopes, easy to use modulation routings, as well as 16 banks of 16 patches, it’s got plenty going on.”
