How To Recreate Classic ’70s String Synth Ensemble Sound On The Korg multi/poly Synthesizer

Sound designer Ian Dixon – in his latest video – takes a look at recreating the sound of classic ’70s string synths with the Korg multi/poly synthesizer.

Dixon walks through the sound design process, step-by-step, and caps the video off with a full audio demo.

Video Summary:

“In this tutorial, I build the complete performance from an initialized sound, creating a Solina-style string layer with multiple oscillators, filtering, ensemble modulation, phaser and stereo delay. I then add a detuned synth bass on Layer B and use key zones to create a playable strings-and-bass keyboard split.

Everything is programmed directly on the Multi/Poly — no software editor required.”

Free Sound Library For Korg modWave Synthesizer

Podcaster and sound designer Ian Dixon has released another in his series of free sound libraries for the Korg modWave synthesizer, The Organ Collection.

What he has to say about it:

“This is my Organ collection for the Korg Modwave, designed to give you classic organ tones with modern control. Inspired by the Modwave’s four modulation controls, I’ve created a set of organ patches that use these as real-time drawbars to deliver an authentic organ sound. You’ll find recreations of classic organs from artists like Genesis and Pink Floyd, including CX3, DW8000, Korg M1, Polysix, and even Vox Continental organs.

The patches take full advantage of the Modwave’s effects section, modulation controls, and the Kaoss pad, giving you complete control over the sound. Whether you’re looking for vintage organ tones or creative new possibilities, this free sound pack has something for every synth lover.”

Dixon’s walkthrough video:

In addition to offering a preview of the sound library, Dixon also shares tips for sound design on the modWave.

The Organ Collection for the Korg Modwave is available now as a free download.

Korg Wavestate Basics – Understanding Performances, Programs And Wave Sequences

Synthesist Ian Dixon shared this tutorial video, exploring the patching architecture of the Korg wavestate synthesizer.

The wavestate is a powerful instrument with deep synthesis capabilities, which can make it daunting to learn. Dixon does a great job of explaining how Performances, Programs & Wave Sequences work together, and also how they can be used independently.

Korg Wavestate Basics: Understanding Performances, Programs, and Wave Sequences

Ian Dixon’s tips should work with all versions of the Korg wavestate, including the SE and software versions.
