Oi, Grandad! features four voices, each of which has its own filter, envelope and delay controls. It’s basically four complete synths in one.

Each voice can hold a .wav audio file and has familiar granular controls for manipulation. Use the on-screen dials to adjust grain, density, position, detune, spread and pitch. The filter has multiple modes and there’s full cut-off and resonance knobs to play with.

In addition, the synth features an extensive modulation section offering 12 different modulation sequencers so you can use them as a simple LFO or get your groove on with controls over pitch and timing for more complex sequences.

Additionally, there is a drone button for rapid envelope-ignoring creation of moody soundscapes and animating pads and textures.

And – given that the primary sound sources are your own .wav samples – it’s tailor-made for making a sound that’s literally all your own.

Its core is based on open-source HISE development (respect to all involved) and we’re really impressed with the range of features and ease of use.

Spitfire Audio BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover plugin is now instantly free for everyone.

Previously available either for $49 or as a free download to anyone who was prepared to answer a questionnaire and thereafter wait 14 days.

Discover is designed to be an easy-to-use entry point into the world of orchestral composition. It features 33 instruments (these cover strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion) and 47 playing techniques, all mixed into a single signal.

The instrument offers simple controls and weighs in at just 200MB, though Spitfire claims that the sound is “remarkable” nonetheless.

“Our ambition for… Discover is that it becomes the absolute entry point for anybody wanting to discover orchestral music, with all of the instruments that you would need to create basic orchestrations, but with a very much reduced footprint and reduced articulations,” says Spitfire Audio co-founder Paul Thomson.

Available for PC and Mac in VST/AU/AAX formats, BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover can be downloaded for free from the Spitfire Audio website. Novation’s Bass Station and V-Station synth plugins are now free to download for Mac and Windows. but there’s no M1 support.

Built to emulate two of Novation’s ‘90s hardware synths, the company has now discontinued them as commercial products and made them available for free as ‘legacy’ software.

V-Station is an emulation of the K-Station synth that was released in 2002. It has a 3-oscillator sound engine with noise and FM capabilities, an arpeggiator, effects, 200 user programs and 200 factory presets. Polyphony is eight notes.

Bass Station emulates the DCO oscillators and analog signal path of the classic Novation Bass Station synthesizer. Modeled to recreate the sounds of the hardware original, the plugin can be used for deep bass sounds and leads alike. It comes with 100 presets.
