Muse On Unique ‘Sewing-Gurdy’ Electronic Instrument

Singer Sound System shared this take on New Born by Muse, arranged for the Sewing-Gurdy.

The Sewing-Gurdy is a unique electronic hurdy-gurdy, driven by a sewing machine pedal. The Sewing-Gurdy joins other hurdy-gurdy inspired instruments that we has featured, including the Balfolk Boombox.

They note that, “In this video, it’s just my instrument and a kick.”

OMNICYCLONE Generative FM Beat Machine

Spherical Sound Society shared this demo of OMNICYCLONE, described as a “generative FM beat machine”.

At its core lies an OPL2 emulator that has been extensively modified to achieve things the original Yamaha chips couldn’t – like a fully stereo image. Some Yamaha chips of that era only offered hard-panned stereo (just center, left, or right). OMNICYCLONE provides 256 possible stereo positions.

The synth is controlled by 2 banks of parameters, plus a fully-featured global LFO and global parameters for controlling each of the ADSR stages. It also includes a variety of new generative strategies that are explained in the manual.

OMNICYCLONE is available in 3 versions:

  • As a fully assembled unit.
  • As a full kit that the user has to build.
  • As a PCB + Programmed Microcontroller for advanced builders. The user has to source the rest of the components and build the synth.

Visit the developer’s site for details.

Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays’ September Fifteenth

Synthesist Marko Ettlich – in his latest RetroSound video – shares his take on September Fifteenth, by Pat Metheny (guitars) and Lyle Mays (keyboards).

The original comes from the classic Metheny/Mays album As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls. The albums features gorgeous Oberheim synth pads and soloes by Mays, in addition to his expressive piano playing.

“My intention is not to create covers that sound exactly like the original,” notes Ettlich. “It’s more of an inspiration, with my sounds from the old synthesizers from the past and of course the great appreciation for the original performers and producers.”
