Minimal Audio reverses decision to make their Current Soft Synth Subscription-only: “We will fix it, and we hope that you guys will give us another chance”

On Wednesday, Minimal Audio announced the release of Current, a virtual instrument plugin that featured a number of synth engines, all of Minimal’s audio effects and a cloud-connected content platform.

On release, the plugin was only available to customers on a subscription plan that ranged from $10-$15 a month. Many of Minimal Audio’s users weren’t happy with this decision, and the decision to offer the synth exclusively on a subscription basis provoked widespread criticism across social media, especially among fans of the developer’s software, many of whom have already shelled out for the effects included in Current.

Some wanted to purchase only the synth without being forced to pay for samples and presets they didn’t want, while others were unhappy that they’d already purchased Minimal Audio’s effects plugins and would now effectively be paying twice for those if they wanted to access the synth. Many voiced a general disapproval of the growing trend of subscription-based products in the music tech industry.

“Damn this looks incredible. I own all your plugins fully and I’ve been looking so forward to snagging this too, but the subscription based model seems like a stretch for me and many others. Please do a version where we can own the synth!” says @watermelonxwizard in a comment on Current’s launch video.

“Been a Minimal fan since day one and have purchased every effect and almost every pack,” says fellow commenter @maxfield84906. “It’s a bummer to see that not count for anything with this new model.”

Yesterday, Minimal Audio posted a video addressing these concerns and informing its customers that the subscription model would be ditched in favour of a new pricing plan.

Current will now be available on a rent-to-own basis ($15/month or $120/year) that gives customers instant access to everything it offers: the synth, the effects and all of the sounds and presets on the Stream content platform. After each year of payment, customers will receive credit equal to their subscription spending, which can be used to purchase perpetual licenses on products of their choosing.

In addition to the rent-to-own plan, customers also have the option to purchase a ‘basic’ version of Current for $200. This will give customers access to Current’s synth engines and effects without the cloud-integrated content platform, while individual sound and preset packs can still be purchased separately. Effects can be used within Current but not as standalone plugins.

“Our goal with Current was to build a constantly evolving synthesis ecosystem. We wanted to make sure everybody experienced what our vision for that product is. But after everybody’s feedback, we realized that it doesn’t make sense when if you want to leave the system you lose access to all that stuff after being on it for such a long period of time,” says Minimal Audio CEO Jake Penn.

“I want to apologise for how poorly thought-out this was […] we were so focused on the product that we lost a business vision that made sense in terms of pricing, the products on the website and the value to the user. We will fix it, and we hope that you guys will give us another chance.”

Minimal Audio Releases Current, A Subscription-Based Soft Synth Powerhouse

Looks like Minimal Audio team has been very busy over the last few years and shows no sign of slowing down.

Minimal Audio, the developer of Rift,  Fuse Compressor, and the subscription-based sample platform Stream, has announced the release of a new plugin. Minimal Audio’s first virtual instrument Current, a subscription-based synth, sampler and multi-effects plugin that is “more than just another soft synth”. Current comprises a number of synth engines alongside a sampler, effects suite and a Splice-style cloud-based content platform.

The core of Current’s are five sound engines. These include a two-oscillator wavetable synth, a granular synth and an FM synth, alongside a sampler module and an additive sub oscillator.

These run through a versatile dual filter, offering a number of filter types (morphing, comb, phaser and more) and into an effects section that houses Minimal’s entire suite of audio effects, including the Rift distortion plugin, Morph EQ, Cluster Delay and Fuse Compressor, alongside a reverb, chorus, and phaser.

Current also gives users access to a cloud-based content platform that Minimal have called Stream. This features a regularly updated library of presets, wavetables and sounds, alongside a steady stream of curated sample packs crafted by Minimal’s sound design team.

Current also features a flexible, MPE-compatible modulation system, equipped with LFOs, envelopes, curve sequencers and envelope followers, alongside two MIDI effects, an arpeggiator and chord generator.

Unlike Minimal Audio’s effects plugins, Current is a subscription-based product that costs $15 monthly or $120 annually, including 30-Day Free Trial.

Current is available now for Windows and Mac in VST2/VST3/AU/AAX formats. Find out more about Current on Minimal Audio website.
