Eventide new Riptide Pedal combines Classic Vibe + Overdrive Effects

Eventide new Riptide pedal combines an overdrive with a Uni-Vibe-inspired modulation side.

Eventide Audio has introduced the Riptide pedal, a new effect that combines classic overdrive combined with “swirling vibey waves of lush modulation”, inspired by the classic Shin-ei Uni-Vibe.

Like us, they’re thinking Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour and Robin Trower in this vibe and overdrive pedal, a much more classic proposition than the otherworldly sounds from this year’s superb H90 Harmonizer, but with Eventide on such a consistent roll with pedals, we are excited to hear it.

OK it’s a good time for Uni-Vibe fans, hot on the heels of the Stymon Ultraviolet.

The two classic effects are offered with the Riptide pedal as “Vibe” and “Drive.”

Riptide features two distinct voicings each for both Vibe and Drive, delivered in stereo. The two colors of balanced, touch-sensitive overdrive distortion are Green for a dynamic mid-range crunch and Red for a smooth and boosted overdrive sound.

The Green for Vibe captures the richness and modulation of the original Uni-Vibe – enhanced by stereo output – while Red offers a deeper, phase-y effect. Players can reorder the process from Drive into Vibe or Vibe into Drive, and any combination of parameters can be mapped to an expression pedal.

Three knobs for Drive, three for Vibe, and a pair of dual-action latching or momentary footswitches provide players effect control, with five onboard presets and more available using Eventide Device Manager (EDM) softwareA triple Aux switch can be used for easy preset selection or a single Aux switch for Tap Tempo. Riptide’s Catch-up mode lets players dial in their sound when toggling between presets/parameters.

The pedal offers multiple bypass options – Buffered, Relay, DSP+FX or Kill dry. It also provides MIDI support over USB.

Features:

  • Four Effects: 2 Overdrives, 2 Uni-Vibes
  • Drive & Vibe at the press of a button
  • No Deep Dives: 3 Drive Knobs, 3 Vibe Knobs
  • Five presets at your feet — more available with Eventide Device Manager (EDM) software
  • Dual-action Active Footswitch is latching or momentary
  • Rear panel Guitar/Line Level switch for matching impedances with guitar, synths, FX loop or DAW interface
  • Map any combination of parameters to an Expression Pedal
  • Use a single Aux switch for Tap Tempo or a triple Aux switch for easy preset changing
  • MIDI capability over TRS (use with a MIDI to TRS cable Type A or converter box) or USB
  • Multiple Bypass options: Buffered, Relay, DSP+FX or Kill dry
  • Catch-up mode to dial in your sound when toggling between presets/parameters
  • Eventide Device Manager PC or Mac application for software updates, system settings and creating/saving presets

The Eventide Riptide pedal has an MSRP of $299. The first batch of Riptide is available now, and will be available internationally from mid-November, from Eventide and through U.S. dealers.

XILS-Lab Releases Ring’X Multi-Effect Plugin

Audio software company XILS-lab is proud to release Ring’X — readily representing the latest addition to its lengthening line of virtual effects as an inspiring and musical multi-effect plug-in par excellence.

XILS Lab is putting some of its synth modelling expertise into its latest multi-effect plugin, Ring’X, which enables you to load up effects of your choice, in any order, and includes classic synth filters.

Ring’X uses a 6-slot ‘Effect Ring’ that lets you load up its processors. These include Analog Filter, which is modelled on the filter used in the early-’80s Elka Synthex subtractive synthesis-based polytimbral powerhouse, and has five filter types (two low-pass, a high-pass, and two band-pass).

Another filter is also based on a classic synth module – Analog 18db is modelled on the self-oscillating filter from the legendary EMS VCS3. Other modules are more standard effects and include Chorus, Delay, Distortion, Parametric EQ (with three bands, each selectable from six standard filter types), Phaser and Reverb.

Usefully, each effect has four modulation points with source and destination menus, and there’s both step and locator-based sequencing for modulating effects – either independently or sync’d to your DAW.

In addition, there are other input follower modules. Transient detects those present in the input signal, and can be set so each peak triggers a simple envelope. A Detection module does the same with sibilance, while a Gate module removes parts of the input signal below a set threshold.

Ring’X is a plugin that was born out of user demand, according to XILS-lab CEO Xavier Oudin. Mind you, he does then use the dreaded ‘Swiss Army Knife’ comparison, as well.

“For a number of years, customers have been asking me to create an effect featuring filters extracted from our synthesizers,” he says. “This idea grew into providing a sort of Swiss Army Knife-style tool capable of sculpting audio with modulation, all fully independent of its content, and also able to create any kind of de-esser and transient shaper with far more possibilities than standard effects.”

There’s more information an a demo at the XILS-lab website, and more short videos of the effect in action at the company’s YouTube channel. Ring’X is available now for the introductory price of €69 until October 31, 2023 (regular price €179) and runs on PC and Mac in VST/AU/AAX formats.
