LANDR Releases AI-powered Mastering Plugin for DAW

LANDR has announced the release of a new plugin that brings the AI-powered automated mastering technology from its online mastering platform to the DAW for the first time.

LANDR let us know that its Mastering Plugin is based on a patented AI engine that’s supported by over a decade of R&D and has been trained by Grammy-winning audio engineers.

Much like LANDR’s browser-based mastering platform, the plugin will analyse any track and adapt its engine to the track’s sonic characteristics, delivering a personalized master that LANDR says is equal in quality to something you’d receive from a professional engineer.

Mastering a track with the LANDR Mastering Plugin is as easy as loading the plugin on your master bus, letting the plugin scan the loudest part of your track, and selecting one of three styles to determine the sonic vibe of your master. You can choose between Warmth, a vintage-sounding master, Balanced, a controlled master with a focus on clarity and depth, and Open, a modern-sounding master with an emphasis on punch and presence.

Those wanting a little more control over their master are able to fine-tune the results with a three-band equalizer and see the results via the spectral display. You’re also able to dial in additional vocal presence with the presence control, tweak loudness with reference to the LUFS meter, or increase the width and spatialization of your mix with a stereo width slider.

Compression controls enable you adjust dynamics while a saturation dial adds thickening, transformer-style harmonics and an onboard de-esser can be dialled in to remove unwanted sibilance. All of these controls will affect the master in real-time so that adjustments can be made on-the-fly.

“It’s the human touch that makes LANDR Mastering so unique. Over the past 10 years, our Grammy Award-winning audio engineers have spent thousands of hours personally training our AI mastering engine,” said Daniel Rowland, Award-winning Producer and Head of Strategy and Partnerships at LANDR. “Now, you can use LANDR Mastering as a plugin in your DAW? integrated as part of your workflow with additional controls to help customize your sound. This is a game-changer for anyone mastering their own music,” added Rowland.

LANDR Mastering Plugin is available now for Windows and Mac in VST3/AU/AAX formats. It’s priced at $299 or can be accessed via LANDR’s Studio Pro subscription at $15.99/month.

Phonicbloom introduces Loopstyler, A Powerful Pocket Synthesizer

Phonicbloom Loopstyler is a pocket synthesizer, sampler and looper that you can play like a Stylophone. And, you can play it with a headphone jack…

Phonicbloom makes some creative looking music gear, including a ‘tuneable electronic tongue drum’ (called Wing Drum) and Glo, the Polyphonic Whale, which is an ambient music producer that utilises environmental sounds around you. The company’s latest device is Loopstyler, which you can play like a classic Stylophone.

Loopstyler is a powerful pocket synth and sampler with 32 notes of polyphony, sampling, multitrack sequencing and looping. It fits in your pocket, plays like a Stylophone. It is capable of running multiple sound engines and effects at once. You can use it as a tape looper, or program with a multitrack sequencer.

Phonicbloom even claims it is also an audio interface and MIDI controller, making it pretty much everything we can imagine in one pocket-sized unit. What more could we want?

Loopstyler manages to cram in several sound engines including FM, Karplus‑Strong, granular and subtractive synthesis. But if these are not enough, just sample in your own sounds and max out the supplied SD card. It also includes effects, and these can be added per voice or globally.

There are four play modes (Easy Play, Tape Loop, Multitrack Sequencer, Expert Programming) on Loopstyler. Easy Play enables you select a sound from the ‘vast’ library, choose a scale and play the device like a Stylophone. Tape Loop sounds very interesting as you can loop recorded samples, and control playback using an accelerometer and a light sensor.

The third mode is the multitrack sequencer where you build a track note by note and across multiple tracks using internal sounds or sampled sources. And, finally, you probably have to be an advanced user to fully exploit ‘Expert Programming’, where you can sequence, arpeggiate, modulate, and more. The extensive manual is recommended for this one.

Loopstyler is available to preorders now price at €175 plus tax, likely to be ready in two to three months.

Behringer VCS 3 Synthesizer Update

Behringer has shared an update on their upcoming Synthi VCS 3 copy, which was originally announced six years ago when the company announced plans to create a line of vintage synth knockoffs, including the Roland SH-101, Korg MS-20, ARP 2600 and Wasp.

In addition to these images, they gave this status update on the Behringer VCS 3:

“In our previous update, we shared our mechanical challenges with the pin matrix, which have now been resolved. We’re very pleased to report that it has passed a stringent 100,000 lifecycle test.

We’re now shipping units to our beta testers for final testing and comparison with the original synthesizer. Once passed, we will start manufacturing.

We know this synth has taken much longer than we thought, but we’re sure the wait is worth it.”

The Behringer VCS 3 is designed to be an inexpensive, unofficial copy of the original EMS Synthi VCS3. The original is still in production, but with boutique prices and limited availability.

Like its other vintage synth copies, Behringer has added basic MIDI control, so you can play the synth using standard control keyboards.

Features (Preliminary):

  • Analog synthesizer with triple VCO design
  • Reproduction of original “VCS3” circuitry
  • Analog signal path with VCO, VCF and VCA
  • VCOs featuring multi-turn knobs for precise frequency control
  • Variable oscillator shapes with variable pulse widths
  • 24 dB low pass filter with resonance
  • 16 x 16 pin patch bay serves as signal routing matrix by inserting pins into holes
  • Ring modulator adds insane spice and edge to your sounds
  • Dedicated and fully analog triangle/square wave LFO
  • Noise generator dramatically expands waveform generation
  • Two-axis joystick serves as performance controller
  • 42 controls give you direct and real-time access to all important parameters
  • External audio inputs for processing external sound sources
  • MIDI implementation with MIDI channel and Voice Priority selection
  • 3-Year Warranty Program

Details on pricing and availability are still to be announced.
