Slate Digital claims that MetaTune is “the best automatic tuner on earth”.

Slate Digital claims to have beaten Auto-Tune at its own game with the new MetaTune plugin.

“Say goodbye to buggy, expensive automatic tuners,” says Slate

If you decides to create an automatic tuning plugin, it is inevitable that it will be compared to Antares Auto-Tune, so Slate Digital is coming out fighting, claiming that MetaTune is “the best automatic tuner on earth”.

In fact, many people do not want an automatic tuning plugin for practical purposes, because they simply want to create ‘that’ vocal effect. MetaTune promises to give it to you, with enhanced features such as Negative Speed and Note Stabilizer offering you more options and control.

Allied to this is an easy-to-use interface that is said to be accessible even to those who know nothing about scales and chords, with so-called HeatMaps showing you where your notes are landing and how they are being adjusted.

In addition, there are Groups, which enable you to make adjustments to multiple instances of MetaTune simultaneously. This should ease the process of making across-the-board key changes.

MetaTune is available now priced at $199 (iLok USB dongle required), and is also included in Slate Digital’s All Access subscription bundle. It runs on PC and Mac in VST/AU/AAX formats.

Antares Audio Technology introduces Auto-Tune Slice “The World’s Most Advanced Vocal Sampler” from Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner

Antares Audio Technology, creators of Auto-Tune, has introduced Auto-Tune Slice, a hybrid instrument that is both a precision sampler and flexible synthesizer, this features presets from the likes of Bon Iver and The National’s Aaron Dessner.

The company describes Auto-Tune Slice as “the world’s most advanced vocal sampler.” Auto-Tune Slice is optimized for vocals, but can also be used for beats, instruments, and other audio.

Auto-Tune Slice ships with more than 200 vocal samples and presets, created both by sound designers and artists/producers. More will be released in due course via a new platform called Samplescape.

Auto-Tune Slice turns samples into slices that automatically map to your MIDI controller. The application turns any sample into a playable instrument, enabling you to rearrange slices, create new phrases and patterns, and manipulate sounds with 14 built-in effects.

In addition, Auto-Tune Slice has “Auto-Tune baked into its DNA”. Direct Auto-Tune integration lets you tune your samples without ever leaving the Auto-Tune Slice environment. According to the developers, this – along with advanced transient detection – means that it can slice up vocals more accurately than traditional samplers.

Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) is full of praise for the new software, saying: “It lets me take something that’s only four seconds long and create a whole new song from it. Auto-Tune Slice has helped me create sounds I could never have imagined before.”

Aaron Dessner, meanwhile, reports that “I’ve already had really creative breakthroughs using Auto-Tune Slice. It’s a great tool for taking vocal tracks you already have and developing them into new hooks.”

Cherry Audio ‘Hot-Rodded’ Stardust 201 plugin is a $19 Roland Space Echo Emulation that will “never break down”

Cherry Audio has introduced Stardust 201 Tape Echo, an unofficial “hot-rodded” software emulation of the classic Roland Space Echo tape echo effects of the 70s and 80s.

While the Tape Echo section includes all seven head modes from Roland’s hardware, you also get a tape speed mod section, along with a wow and flutter control and a motor on/off ‘kill’ switch for creative tape-stop effects.

Other modern niceities include DAW tempo sync and a ‘wide’ mode that quadruples the maximum delay time.

In addition, you get the BBD chorus effect that was added to later Space Echo models. This now has speed and depth controls, along with a true stereo mode. If you’re after some warm overdrive, you can choose up to 1,000% input gain, while further niceities include a spring reverb section, bass/treble tone controls and four different visual themes.

Here’s what they say about it:

“Stardust precisely recreates the limited fidelity and stability of audio tape, providing a natural rolloff of bass and treble frequencies for super-warm tonality and minor speed variances, lending an organic chorusing quality to repeats. Cranking the intensity knob overloads the circuit, generating the signature other-worldly runaway echoes and feedback that only a tape echo can produce.

Cherry Audio Stardust 201 Tape Echo includes features from the original RE-201 and RE-301 Space Echo units, and we’ve added some of our own to create a great-sounding, super-flexible, ideal tape echo effect that never breaks down and never needs demagnetizing, all for less than the price of a Space Echo replacement audio tape loop!”

Features:

  • “Authentically modeled” vintage tape echo, including seven virtual tape head modes
  • 4x-extended “wide mode” delay time range
  • LFO echo time mod section
  • Sync to DAW master tempo
  • “Motor kill” switch
  • True-stereo modeled BBD chorus circuit
  • Modeled input overdrive for crunchy tones
  • Dual independent tape loops for super-wide stereo imaging
  • Stereo spring reverb
  • Selectable mono/stereo modes
  • Bass and treble EQ controls
  • User-selectable color themes

Stardust 201 is available for Mac & Windows, with an intro price of $19 , regular price $29.
