Phoenix-based Eurorack manufacturer Blue Lantern Modules shared this preview of a complete lineup of 5U/MU synth modules.

The modules are designed to be competitively priced – with module prices currently ranging from $125-200, and “skiff-friendly”.

They’ve recently introduced three 5U/MU modules:

• Mixer-VCA-Decay-S&h-White Noise Generator – a multi-function module that can be use as a mixer, sample and hold, percussion sound generator and more
• Yarns – an expanded version of the Mutable Instruments Yarns MIDI-to-CV module.
• VCO – an analog VCO that offers 8-different waveforms

Their prototype 5U/MU system also features dual-VCO and filter modules. Details are still to be announced on these modules.

Synthesist Alex Ball – in his latest video – takes an in-depth look at the Moog Liberation and the rise of the keytar.

Ball discusses keytar history, the precursors to the keytar and offers a lot of musical demonstrations of the Liberation. Ball argues that the keytar is in equal parts “intriguing and silly”, and that’s definitely true. But the physicality and performance technique of the keytar is arguably an important part of the music, too.

In the early ’70s, there was a lot of interest in this, and in turning the synthesizer into a live performance instrument. Check out this 1973 performance of Frankenstein, by The Edgar Winter Group:

With Frankenstein, Winter singlehandedly turned the synth into a live performance instrument that could hold its own as part of a rock band.
