Behringer Intros Hot Pink DFAM Knockoff, The ‘Edge’

A pink percussive partner for Crave

Behringer has introduced what appears to be a close knockoff of the Moog DFAM, with the Edge semi-modular percussion synth. Already being likened by many to the Moog DFAM – which also happens to be a semi-modular percussion synth – this has a striking pink chassis, and promises a sound “as bold as its looks”.

This is generated by dual VCOs with pulse and triangle waves, oscillator sync, and FM. There’s also a dual 8-step sequencer, 15×10 patch matrix, and “comprehensive” MIDI implementation.

Behringer says that the Edge offers comprehensive MIDI implementation. They haven’t released specs for the Edge yet, but based on the interface, it looks like MIDI support is limited to receiving MIDI clock, vs offering MIDI control of drum voice parameters or sequencing of pitch and velocity.

Edge is designed as a sidekick for Behringer’s Crave synth, from which it takes plenty of design cues.

The Behringer Edge is priced at $219. Details on availability are to be announced.

Artiphon Orba, a synth, looper and MIDI controller, can now be used to create “musical selfies”

Artiphon has now added a new, more visual string to the Orba’s bow by releasing the companion Orbacam iOS app.

Expect to see videos created with the Orbacam app all over social media soon.

The app appears to be designed for those who want to create fun, personalized video content for social media platforms. There’s no audio routing or post production required – the effects are baked into the video export – and you can also mix in your phone mic if you want to add some vocals.

Sync your Orba

Sync your Orba to Orbacam and not only can you use the drum, bass, chord and lead modes to make beats, but you can also create videos with visual effects that are triggered by the music. Artiphon says that you’re effectively creating “musical selfies” – you can record video live or import it from your camera roll – which seems like as good a description as any.d not only can you use the drum, bass, chord and lead modes to make beats, but you can also create videos with visual effects that are triggered by the music. “We believe that music is always a multisensory experience, and we designed Orbacam as an auditory, visual, and tactile experience that anyone can play immediately,” explains Artiphon founder and CEO Mike Butera.

“We’ve seen the power of synchronizing music with social content, but almost all of that is just pasting someone else’s song on your video. Now people can create musical videos that are entirely their own.”

Orbacam can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and is free but, you will need an Orba to use it.

PreSonus V2 R-Series monitors promise more control and improved performance

PreSonus second-generation R-Series monitors promise more control and improved performance.

PreSonus is updating its studio monitor range with two new models: the R65 V2 and R80 V2. These second-generation speakers replace the original R-Series, promising more control and improved sound.

The R65 V2 and R80 V2 are said to add both air and warmth to your music

The R65 V2 and R80 V2 feature the Acoustic Tuning controls from PreSonus’s Eris monitor line. So, you get Low Cutoff, Mid Frequency, and High Frequency controls, along with a three-position Acoustic Space switch that can be used if you have your speakers against a wall or in a corner.

The upgraded 140W power amp is designed to deliver warmer, smoother frequency response and distortion-free sound, even when you crank up the volume.

The tweeter is a custom-designed, 6.8-square-inch Air Motion Transformer (AMT) affair that we are informed is great for hearing the ultra-high frequencies that can add ‘air’ to the sound. This also features a thin folded Kapton membrane that promises to pick out the subtlest details in your music, and we are assured that you can expect a wider listening sweet spot with the AMT design.

The R65 V2 and R80 V2 feature a custom-woven, composite woofer: sized at 6.5 or 8 inches, depending on which model you go for, while balanced XLR/1/4-inch TRS and unbalanced RCA input connections give you plenty of flexibility.

The R65 V2 and R80 V2 are available now priced at $330 and $430 respectively (for a single monitor).
