Moog Subsequent 25 Analog Synthesizer

Whenever Moog releases a new synth it is a norm getting a little excited about it. And the Moog Subsequent 25 or Sub 25 is no exception. It is the successor to the Sub Phatty.

The new Moog Subsequent 25 is a two-note paraphonic analog synth paired with a 25-note keyboard, making it the most compact of Moog’s current crop of non-modular synths. It packs two oscillators, which are accompanied by an additional sub oscillator and noise generator. These can be used in two ways – Unison mode, in which the three oscillators are stacked, and the new Duo Mode, which is inherited from the Subsequent 37 and allowing users play two distinct notes with the individual oscillators.

In addition, the synth includes full MIDI implementation for the knob-per-function front panel, and a free editor/librarian application allowing users to save and recall an unlimited number of sounds. Other improvements inherited from the Subsequent range include reshaped gain staging for the ladder filter, increased headroom and improved keybed. The Multidrive circuit has been retuned as well, and according to Moog, this now extends far beyond the level of grittiness achievable from the Sub Phatty.

Other highlights of the Subsequent 25 include an input for processing external audio, CV inputs to control pitch, filter, volume and a gate trigger, plus a high-powered headphone amplifier.

The Sub 25 takes what made its predecessor such a powerful and aggressive tone monster and just goes bigger.

The Moog Subsequent 25 is available now.

Moog ONE Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer

The new Moog One could be the Moog polysynth that you have always wanted. Any Moog synth launch is greeted with excitement, but when it is the company’s first polysynth in more than three decades, it is a particular big deal. The new Moog One is described as an “analogue dream synth”, and boasts what Moog is said to be calling the most advanced architecture ever for one of its instruments.

Available in eight- and 16-voice versions, the Moog One comes with three VCOs and two independent analogue filters (a variable state filter and a Moog ladder filter) that can be run in series or parallel. On top of that there is a dual-source variable analogue noise generator, an analogue mixer with external audio input, four LFOs and three envelope generators.

In addition, the Moog One is tri-timbral, so you can effectively play three synths simultaneously. These can be split, layered or zoned across the keyboard, all within a single preset. Each of these synths can have its own parameter settings, note range, arpeggiator, sequencer and effects, so the sound design potential is massive. On the effects, you get plenty, which can be applied on the aforementioned per-synth basis or to the master bus. The likes of chorus, delay, phase, bit reduction and vocoding are supplemented by a range of Eventide reverbs. The effects are digital, but you can ensure an all-analogue signal path if you ‘true bypass’ them.

The Moog One is capable of storing tens of thousands of presets, all of which can be browsed from the central LCD panel. You can also assign presets to the front-panel Performance Sets for quick access, while a Snapshot button enables you to capture all current settings immediately. Presets can be shared via USB drive, too, so it is easy to take the sounds of one Moog One to another. In terms of control, you get 73 knobs and 144 buttons, while additional parameters can be accessed from the LCD centre panel. The synth has a handcrafted ash cabinet and an aluminium front panel, while the 61-note keybed comes from Fatar. An assignable pressure-sensitive X/Y pad provides further expressivity options.

The new Moog One will exceed your every expectation as it inspires your musical creativity and opens portals to a vast sonic universe.

The Moog One is available for $5,999 for the 8-voice and model, $7,999 for the 16-voice model. See the Moog website for details.

Moog Sub Phatty

[

2013 NAMM Show: Introducing the Moog Sub Phatty Analog Synthesizer. The latest member of Phatty Family is the Grittiest Moog Synth Ever. Additionally, the new two-oscillator analog synthesizer will be Moog’s most affordable keyboard synth. The soul and hands-on, real-time sound design functionality of vintage Moog instruments with a completely new – and stunningly aggressive – sound design machine. Fitted with 25 full-size synth action keys, LFO, and legendary Moog ladder filter, 16 presets with panel mode, and a 31 knob front panel, Moog’s classic control design plugs you straight into the analog heart of this powerful new instrument.

The Sub Phatty is the first analog synth to feature Moog’s transformative new Multidrive section. Built into the filter section, the Multidrive circuit drives (or enthusiastically overdrives, depending on how you set it) the filter, for rich and powerful effects. The good news is that with the Sub Phatty, the variable, pre/post-filter Multidrive lets you dial up everything from gnarly, classic grit to sizzling modern distortion. Experiment with this new circuit and unlock an undiscovered world of vivid analog tonalities.

The Legendary Ladder Filter onboard – The Sub Phatty’s ladder lets you dial in your optimal filter cutoff frequency and tweak the resonance to create classic fat ‘n’ punchy Moog sounds. Want to modulate your filter resonance? The Moog Sub Phatty’s onboard LFO lets you modulate without having to commandeer one of your sound generating oscillators (as on vintage Minimoogs). Get creative with key-synched filter sweeps and more, for delectable, swirlicious sounds that will enhance your productions with authentic Moog analog goodness.

The Moog Sub Phatty sports control voltage and keyboard gate inputs that allow you to connect your new Moog with your vintage or any other gear that has CV/gate connectivity. The Sub Phatty sports Filter CV, Pitch CV, and Volume CV, as well as Keyboard Gate connections, putting you firmly in the control seat. And of course, you get MIDI DIN In and Out, as well as MIDI over USB for communication with your DAW.

If you are looking for an affordable, compact Moog mono synth, the Moog Sub Phatty – Go for it!
